Backup copy job - help with setup
Hello everyone - Apologies if this has been covered before, but I could do with some assistance with the creation of a backup copy job in Veeam. I have read through the guides which are very good, but I cannot put it into my context.
We have a new Microsoft Exchange 2013 DAG where I am successfully backing up one of the nodes to a NAS server off site (site A). The job is set to keep 31 days with a synthetic full every Saturday.
I need to start looking at the retention period for this backup, and I believe this is where the backup copy job comes in.
Here are my requirements:
Copy job will store the data at another off site location (site B)
I am selecting a backup job as the source option
I want to keep 4 weekly, 12 monthly, 2 yearly
I cannot copy data during the hours of 08:00 - 18:00 Monday - Friday
I would really appreciate it if someone could explain how I would set a copy job up to achieve this?
If you need any more info, just let me know.
Thanks
Dan

Re: Backup copy job - help with setup
Hi Dan, the most straightforward setup would be a backup copy job with a weekly copy interval that starts 5 minutes after the source job starts, has minimum regular retention of 2 restore points, 4 weekly, 12 monthly, and 2 yearly restore points for GFS retention, and restricted backup window (08:00 - 18:00 Monday - Friday).

Re: Backup copy job - help with setup
Hi Foggy, thanks for getting back to me.
My main job backs up the Exchange server at 18:00 every night, so I will set the copy interval to start 5 minutes after that.
When you say a weekly copy interval, on what day would it start, and how long would it run for?
Thanks

By weekly copy interval I mean the one that lasts for 7 days. You can create the job on the synthetic full day, for example, and enable backup copy forward lookup so that the first restore point in the chain was created based on the fresh synthetic full.

Re: Backup copy job - help with setup
Thanks, I will kick it off on Saturday 5 minutes after the main job and see how it goes.
I have another question I need some help with, but will create a new thread for that.
Thanks for your help!

Re: Backup copy job - help with setup
Sorry for the delay in updating this thread..
I have finally go round to kicking off the Backup Copy job while the Synthetic Full was being generated. This was done on Saturday 4th October.
I have just connected to the Veeam server and the status shows it as still waiting for new restore points. The main backup job for this runs every night Mon-Sun so I find it odd it hasn't seen some restore points.
If anyone has any more ideas, please let me know.
Cheers

Re: Backup copy job - help with setup
Do you see any restore points created in the backup copy target repository?

Hi,
could you please describe your backup copy job settings - what did you specify as source for backup copy job? Was it VM, backup, or another job?

Also, what are the scheduling settings for the job? Looks like when there's a new restore point available, the backup copy job is not allowed to run, and then the interval expires.

Re: Backup copy job - help with setup
Ok, so at present it is set as follows:
Page 1> Copy every 7 days starting at 6pm (I would enable it on Saturday)
Page 2> Add objects From Backups and I choose my Exchange 2013 backup job which contains two servers
Page 3> Restore points to keep=7 and Keep the following restore points for archival purposes: Weekly=4, Monthly=12, Quarterly=0, Yearly=2
Schedule button> Weekly backup=Saturday 6PM
Advanced button>Defaults
Page 4> Direct
Page 5> Schedule during the following time periods: Denied Mon-Fri 7am-7pm

Re: Backup copy job - help with setup
Not sure what is happening here, I'd recommend contacting support for a closer look. Chances are you have different block sizes for the source backup and backup copy jobs, but that is just a guess, better check with support.
