Backup Copy job warnings "no up to date restore points"

Post by mc625569 »

I have 2 separate backup jobs, and 1 backup copy job.
Both of the backup jobs are newly created in v7, and have completed properly, I can see the backups in the local repo.

I have both jobs included in a single backup copy job, which shows a warning that "no up to date restore points available" and does not show that all the VM's included in the copy job have been properly copied to my remote repo.

I've tried forcing the copy job to restart it's cycle, to recognize that there is in fact data to be copied, but this doesn't seem to solve the issue.

What am I doing wrong?

I’m wondering when the latest backup occurred and what copying period settings the backup copy job has. (Settings -> Job -> Copy every). Thanks.

Yep, there's a probability that the latest restore point had been created by the backup job earlier than the backup copy job interval was started. The backup job just waits for the next restore point to be created.

Hello there,

had a similar situation here when we tried to store the backup copy at the same repo. With a different repo for the copy it works.

There is an in-built mechanism that prevents backup copy job from looking restore points in the repository that is specified as backup copy job target. So, this behavior looks expected.

Thanks.

This still does not work for me. Have v7 R2 patched.
Do have a Repos01 where the Backup Jobs are written. Do have another Repos02 (seperate NAS) where I want to Backup Copy to.
Backup Job ran on fridaynight (from friday to saturday). I create the Backup Copy job on sunday but for all the VM's in the source Backup Job it says "no up-to-date restore points available". Also the jobs gives me a nice Idle without warning.
The same will do with Template-VM. They are scheduled every week to backup but they never change. So Backup Copy will never proces this VM's. Only after a force Full new backup it will process.
This behaviour makes it that I cannot trust fully the Backup Copy. I want to be surely that Backup Copy always will process the last backup whenever it was made.

Oh and some new Backup Copy jobs do ran immediately fine. So this is not unpredictable.
Can not find the reason for "no up-to-date". What will that mean? Is that no Restore Point for the last day of whatever.

The error means that Backup Copy job cannot find backup files containing the specified VMs in source backup repositories.

Backup Copy jobs do not have any known issues that could result in the behavior you are observing, so it must be some misconfiguration on your part. For efficient troubleshooting, please open a support case and arrange webex with one of our support engineers.

What is the Copy every interval setting for the backup copy job that says "no up-to-date restore points available"?

As far as I can understand, you're willing to execute backup copy job only Sunday-Monday. So, have you tried to disable the backup copy job completely during other days of week, instead of using backup windows?

Thanks.

Also, is there a chance that the latest restore point was created more than 1 day prior to Sunday 15:00?

Why does this matter at all? I have a restore point, I want it copied. What's the problem?

You set the interval to every day, which is basically saying that you want to copy one restore point every day, so it will try to find a restore point within the 1 day interval that meets that criteria. It sounds like you only want to copy the most recent restore point from the week, so you should set the interval to weekly with the same "allowed" window.

Ah, that's what that setting is for! I see now. Thanks!

I am having trouble getting the copy job to do what I need. Currently we run a backup once a day at 9:00pm to a local repository on our backup server with a the last 7 days restore points kept. We then need to copy this backup and all of the restore points to USB drives which are rotated and taken offsite. We achieve the copy process currently using robocopy but would prefer Veeam to manage it if possible. What we would like is when the backup job finishes the copy job starts and copies the latest backup and the 7 restore points that are available to the USB drives that are being rotated, is this possible? If so would someone be able to summarise the setup that would be needed for the copy job?

Thanks.

Hi, Nigel,

The backup copy job doesn't copy backup file as a whole, but rather synthetically creates required restore points in "target" location from VM data in source backup repositories. So, once initial run is finished, you will have one restore point on rotated media.

Also, you will have to update to the latest product version first, and implement corresponding registry keys in order for backup copy job to support rotated medias.

Thanks.

Thanks for your response Vladimir.

Is it possible to get the copy job to run after a normal backup job completes so it will start to create the backup copy restore point on the usb drive immediately after the backup job completes? What we would like is for the backup job to run and complete to local storage with 7 days restore points and then upon completion the backup copy job it immediately creates the backup copy with 7 days of restore points on the rotated usb drives for taking off site each morning.

Yes, you can specify the backup copy job as a secondary target for the regular backup job to achieve that. This setting is available in the backup job wizard.

I'm curious about this, when you say set the interval to weekly with the same allowed window, are you referring to making that weekly setting in the source backup job or the backup copy job?

OHHHHH, ok I was completely misunderstanding that. I was reading it as how many times to copy per day. Durrrr :?
Sometimes the obvious is just right there in front of my face....Thanks Foggy

I also thought this! Was wondering why it wasn't copying restore points over as I had this set to 1 per day. Maybe a bit of rewording in the next patch might help clear up this confusion.

Thanks FOGGY. I am glad you asked that because that was my problem. I guess "COPY EVERY XXX" needs a better explanation. I had it configure to every hour, thinking that every hour was going to check if a new restore point was available in the local repository (compared to the BackupCopy repository).. In our case, there are new restore points, but they are all older than 1 HOUR, so in our case, it wasn't making the copy.

Thanks.

I want to make sure I understand this:

Please explain me in plain English what is this supposed to do:

I have a Backup Job BJ1 configured as:
Secondary Target is BackupCopy Job BC1
Starts every day at 5:00 pm
Allowed backup windows is 5:00 pm - 7:00 AM

I have a Backup Copy Job BC1 configured as:
Copy Every: 7 / Day / starting at 8:00 AM
Schedule: ANY time (continuously)

So my questions are:

- BC1 will start at 8:00 AM each day and keep running until is done?
- Please explain me the behavior having the Copy every 7 day

Thanks a lot !
