i am having a hard time getting our Backup Copy jobs to store the correct amount of data. Right now our policy is to keep 14 days and 3 months of data, yet we have over 30 days of incremental. This is after the monthly cycle has passed. How can i configure my policy so it only keeps 14 days and 3 months of data?
Yet on a totally seperate account we have the policy set at 3 days and there is 3 days of data being stored.

Re: Backup copy keeping too many incrementals
Hi Marcus
Welcome to the forum.
I assume, you haven‘t configured weekly full backup copies? With only monthly full copies and 14 days specified, the copy job will keep 30-45 daily incremental restore points. We cannot remove the old incremental backups before the new month has 14 new restore points. Or we would violate your specified retention policy.
That‘s how a forward incremental backup chain works.
Try this configuration:
- Short term retention: 14 days
- Keep weekly: 2 weeks
- Keep monthly: 3 months
Incremental will be kept for 14-21 days and monthly full backups for 3 month.
With only
Best,
Fabian

Re: Backup copy keeping too many incrementals
I realize that I'm having the same issue, my backup copy jobs to Azure are now with almost 60 restore points when I've configured to have only 30 days.
This copy jobs are from daily backup jobs that weekly make a synthetic full, so I would say (maybe I'm wrong) that at maximum I should have 37 restore points on cloud\backup copy, on-prem repository I have 15 RPs.
Also for my weekly backup I have a synthetic full every week, on prem I have 5 rps On cloud/backup copy I have now 8.
My concern is that in cloud all this extra RPs costs a lot of money.
What am I doing wrong on the backup copy jobs setup?
