Backup Copy or File Copy backup jobs on NAS
Hello,
we backup on a server, then on NAS and on RDX afterwards. We can`t backup directly on the RDX-drive so we use file copy to write the backup jobs from the server to a NAS-volume. Afterwards the files are copied on an RDX-media. This job runs on the NAS itself. Could this cause issues in case of having to restore a VMware-guest server (exchange-server etc.) from the NAS-Volume or the RDX-media?
Many thanks in Advance!

While this shouldn't cause any restore issues, could you please clarify why you have to use file copy jobs and not the backup copy jobs?

Hello foggy,
we use file copy jobs because using backup copy jobs causes the copy Job running on the NAS itself to pause. The backup to the RDX-Media takes a very long
time then.

Re: Backup Copy or File Copy backup jobs on NAS
You mean you already have a backup copy job that copies backups from a main server to NAS one. As soon as you create the second backup copy job that copies backups from NAS to RDX, the first one suspends. Sounds about right?

Yes, we already have a copy job that copies backups from a main Server to NAS. The second job that copies backups from NAS to RDX suspends in case of using backup copy because the backup copy job is running continuously. The second job seems to wait for data. Using file copy copying backups from a main Server to NAS we don`t have these issues.

Re: Backup Copy or File Copy backup jobs on NAS
How exactly the second backup copy job is configured? Do you follow these recommendations (backup copy from backup copy)?
Since you're using file copy job, how
* you're dealing with the fact that oldest restore point (.vbk) gets transformed on daily basis
* you're making sure the chain is consistent - no transform or other activity is taking place during copy process
Thanks!

Re: Backup Copy or File Copy backup jobs on NAS
The second copy job runs on the NAS itself, because a direct access to the RDX-media is not possible. This job copies the files written on the specific NAS-repository. While copying, several health checks are performed. As we also run a backup job and a backup copy job to another volume on the NAS, this repository is more or less intermediate for getting the backup files on the RDX-Media daily. We have one media for each weekday. The files on that NAS-Volume are deleted after being copied on RDX-Media. Everyday we have the current backup on NAS and RDX-Media so it should be OK that the oldest restore Point gets transformed daily. We have no other jobs running to that NAS-Volume. As it is a File Copy Job no transform is taking place during copy process.
Thanks for mentioning backup copy from backup copy. Sounds like a good alternative.
