Backup Copy with only one restore point?

Post by TGacs »

I have several backup jobs to a local JBOD and then Backup Copy jobs to multiple rotating media (RDX cartridges) targets that are set up as separate repositories.

This has been functioning for years but the backup copy jobs to the RDX's is very slow, and often takes multiple days to complete, due to the baneful "Merging" activity.

I'd really like to have these jobs complete in a single day, so each day the RDX's can be taken offsite each day for DR.

As I only need a single restore point on the RDX's since they are for DR, I tried to evade the Merging by reducing the restore points in the BC jobs to 1 only to find it has a minimum of 2.

Is there a way to have just 1 restore point on a BC job - i.e., so it replaces the existing backup data on the RDX rather than merging with it?

If not, is there an alternative to using Backup Copy jobs that would be appropriate for this need? (Note that our internet speed sadly makes intersite backups unfeasible.)

Hello,
Indeed 2 is the minimum amount of restore points for backup copy job.
What backup method (are there any scheduled full backups) are you using for the source backup jobs?
Thanks

Synthetic full backups are created weekly in the source backup jobs.

So ideally you would like backup copy job to create a Full backup from source backups on each rotated drive each time the backup copy job runs?

Ideally, my goal is to have the jobs to the rotated drives complete within 1 day reliably. Eliminating the delays due to merging by instead performing just a full backup from source backups is what I speculate may be a solution.

There is no way to change the number of restore points to 1.
I would suggest working on the backup copy job performance in this case.

If you remove the backups from the inserted drive, backup copy job will create a new full instead of copying incremental changes and merging them into existing full. Will that complete faster in your case?

Deleting the backups on the RDX prior to the backupcopy should speed things up. I'll give it a try.
