Backup customer vm's
I have question how to setup the following.
We have our veeam manangement server running with some backup respositories.
We would like to backup some vm's from our customer over the internet.
How dot i set this up.
veeam server -> internal proxy -> internet > proxy at the customer?
How can I let the 2 proxies communicate with each other?

Re: Backup customer vm's
Hi, Carol.
No need to deploy proxy server at customer site, since the role of target agent will be played by repository server. So, instead of proxy, you will have to create a repository there. You can use one of the following repository types:
• Windows server with local or directly attached storage.
• Linux server with local, directly attached storage or mounted NFS.
• CIFS (SMB) share. In this case, you will have, indeed, create additional proxying server at remote site, since SMB share does not support Veeam transport services.
Thanks.

We have to use the Cifs repository.
Sow in the creation of cifs repository at our site , i have to specify in the "share functionallity " the proxy server for the customer site.

Yep, when you create CIFS repository, you will be asked to specify a proxying server through which data should be written to CIFS share. The role of proxying/proxy server can be assigned to any Windows-based machine.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: Backup customer vm's
No, you don’t have to deploy additional instance of VBR&R there.
All you need to do is to add target CIFS share as a repository server, and assign via backup console the role of backup proxy server to whatever Windows based VM at target location you want to. Then, add the said proxy server as a proxying server in the setting of CIFS repository.
Thanks.

Re: Backup customer vm's
My bad, I must have been confused by provided traffic flow.(veeam server -> internal proxy -> internet > proxy)
If you’re going to backup VMs from customer site over the Internet, you will have to deploy one proxy server at customer site and one proxy/proxying server at production. This way, backup data will cross the existing link in highly-compressed and deduplicated state and will be decompressed and written to production CIFS repository by proxying server.
Thanks.

Yep, the ESX(i) server where VMs to backup/replicate reside on should be reachable from backup server. Otherwise, you won’t be able to backup/replicate VMs.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: Backup customer vm's
Sow to recap.
On our site.
- i put my veeam server in the dmz
- i create a cifs repository on our site and chose the newly installed proxy server (proxycust) in the dmz of our customer
- at all times i must have a connection to the esx host and the proxy server (proxycust) from our customer, sow I can see what vm's i want to backup.
On customer site.
- I install the proxy service (the proxycust) on a vm running on that esxi (sow i have a hotadd proxy)
those this somes it up.
Or do you see changes or a better setup?

You have to choose server at your production site as proxying server for CIFS repository. Everything apart for this looks good. Thanks.- i create a cifs repository on our site and chose the newly installed proxy server (proxycust) in the dmz of our customer

Yes, you need a proxy at the customer's site for optimal data retrieval and transfer.

Re: Backup customer vm's
You should have WAN accelerators deployed at both ends. The role of WAN accelerator can be assigned to any Windows-based machine: be it existing proxy server or any other ones. Thanks.

Re: Backup customer vm's
I think what I won't to do isn't possible.
For us to backup the vm's at the customer site, the customer would have to put his esxi or vcenter on the internet, i can never connect whit my veeam server to the esxi or vcenter when this is in their normal lan

I agree that exposing Virtual Infrastructure into the internet is not a good idea, but why not to use a VPN connection in your case?

Re: Backup customer vm's
I know, but what in case this is not an option.
The only thing we want to do is to backup customer vm's to our location without have to install a veeam server at the customer site.

As mentioned, it won’t be possible to backup/replicate VMs, unless customer ESX(i) is reachable via backup server: be it internet or VPN connection. Thanks.
