Backup File Health Check

Post by miketate »

A number of months ago we were forced to split out one of our backup jobs to overcome a large number of incomplete's we kept experiencing due to i/o limits being reached on one of our CIFS dedupe storage devices.

To retain our backup set, we had to manually copy VBK files from one of our other tiers onto our longer term tier which means they don’t come under the control of any backup job and sit outside of the scope any automatic retentions.

We have recently tried to verify the integrity of the files as they have been copied manually and have looked at options to perform health check’s against these files. As they aren’t under the control of any job we ruled out sure backup or the automatic health check’s.

This led us to discover the veeam backup validator tool. After initial testing against a single file proved successful we decided to run this against the CIFS share on our DR device, only to discover that the tool doesn’t seem to like being run against remote storage? Is this a limitation that anyone is aware off, and is there anyway to overcome this?

Many Thanks

Hi Michael, what do you mean by "the tool doesn’t seem to like being run against remote storage"? How do you run the tool exactly?

Hi Foggy - We had mapped a network drive to the UNC path of our CIFS share. We are running the validator against a single VBK file, using the command;

"Veeam.Backup.Validator.exe" /file:"Z:\FRS00.vm-798D2016-12-24T024500_W.vbk" /report:"c:\report\FRS00.html" /format:html

We then receive the following;

Validating...
Failed to Process storage. Failed to access storage "Z:\FRS00.vm-798D2016-12-24T024500_W.vbk"

We have been advised this is because we are running the tool against a non local disk, but was looking for advise on if there is anyway to overcome this, or another way to run a health check against VBK files no longer under the control of veeam.

Thanks

Hi Veeam Experts - Does anyone have any ideas on how we may be able to health check these files?

Many Thanks

Sorry for the delay. It should work the way you describe. I've passed this to QA for confirmation, if there's an issue, we will address it in future updates.
