Backup Proxy Placement

Post by BCT-Tech »

We have 3 sites with ESXi Hosts, and we are backing up to a NAS at the main site:
Main Site = 10 VMs
2nd Site = 2 VMs
3rd Site = 3 VMs

We have separate backup jobs and repositories for each site.

What is best practice for placing backup proxies?

Proxy at each site, automatic selection in each job?
Proxy at each site, specific proxy selection in each job?
Or one proxy at the main site, because that is where the NAS is located?

You will probably want a proxy in each site (hot add).

Automatic should select the local proxy for each job, but since you only have a couple jobs you could explicitly set the proxy.

Thanks.

So if I understand the setup correctly:

Backup Proxy at each site
Specify Proxy for each job
Gateway Server for every repository set to main site where NAS is located
