Backup Repositories with Rotated Drives

Post by baber »

in veeam document say :

Backup Repositories with Rotated Drives can be helpful if you want to store backups on several external hard drives (for example, USB or eSATA) and plan to regularly swap these drives between different locations.

i could not understand means clearly

Rotated drives scenario, in its simplest implementation, allows to backup to one drive during the entire week, then to another one during the entire next week, while taking the first drive to another location (home or another office) for the duration of that week (think offsite backup) and bringing it back to continue backing up to it during the third week, while the second disk is taken offsite, in its turn.

i understand this :

if we select rotate drive , in same time can get backup on 2 repository : 1- default repository 2-external repository
will it work such as raid1 disks will be save one copy from all of data on the other disk ??

No, your understanding is not correct. In this scenario you're backing up to a single repository at any moment in time, but rotate the drives periodically.

With Veeam we recommend a 3-2-1 backup policy, where you have 3 copies of the data on 2 different types of media with one off site. A rotated media allows you to remove a physical repository drive and store it off-site. This could take many forms but to give you an example, you may be backing up to a usb hard drive, this device could be removed from the environment every night and replaced by a second device, these drives could be rotated every day to ensure that at least one copy of the backup was kept offsite at anytime. The Rotated Drive setting ensures the repository server expects the replacement of these drives and accommodates for the missing backup files.

Hi, the rotating discs can be assimilated to the RDX disc system like LTO cartridges but with HDD.

With rotated drives, you will always have one of the disks with backups somewhere offsite and ready to recover the infrastructure on a new hardware (in case your production location dies along with the currently attached drive with backups).

is that your means when select rotate drive for backup repository have to create scale-out backup repository ???
i think that is necessary to create scale out because just in this mode we can select more than repository for save backups on that and can not use feature of backup repository with rotate drive with single repository

is that correct ??

No, scale-out repository is not supported in a rotated drives scenario. You have a single simple repository that is backed by several drives, only one of which is connected at any point in time.

When you detach one disk, you attach another one and the next backup will be created on another disk. If you enable rotated drives option on the repository, the job will not error out but create a backup on the currently attached disk.

You do not need three repositories and edit the job each time, you need just a single one. The job will create a new full backup each time after the disk is swapped.

I don't see the difference between 1 and 2, please clarify. Anyway, after switching the drive, the regular backup job will create a full backup on the next attached one. Backup copy job is able to maintain incremental chain, provided the repository is Windows.

in 1 we disjoin the backup repository after finish 1st job that get full backup and after 1day join that repository

but in 2 disjoin the backup repository after finish 1st job that get full and after 1day add and join NEW RPOSITORY to backup job instead of previous repository

Ok, if you attach the same drive again prior to the very next job run, it will create incremental backup.

Correct, data is written to a single drive, but drives are switched after each job cycle.
