Backup Repository at a offsite location

Hello,

i have a small environment. Now i want to have all my backups on an off-site location as well.
For this reason i have rented a VPS with some storage in a datacenter.
I can only reach this VPS on certain ports through a wan connection (I don't need a wan optimizer).

i have a couple of questions for this:

1) is the traffic between the veeam backup server and the additional backup repository encrypted?
2) where can i find the install files for the backup repository? (as the add new server doesnt work due to the port limitation)... The veeam installer service need share access which is impossible in this situation

Currently Veeam B&R does not provide traffic encryption functionality, however we're planning to include this feature in one of the next product releases. So currently VPN connection is preferred to send backups offsite.

While you can find repository setup package on the Veeam B&R console (VeeamTransport.msi under the Backup/Packages subfolder of the product installation folder) to install backup repository manually, you do need the ports listed in the user guide to be open for the product operation.

hmm thanks, i thought it was FastSCP traffic and thus encrypted?

FastSCP was a separate file copy tool (now is a part of Veeam Backup Free Edition) and has nothing in common with Veeam B&R backup jobs.

FastSCP is used to transfer data between ESXi hosts. In order to secure traffic over the WAN link between Veeam backup components you should be using a VPN connection.

hmm i thought i saw it somewhere in the help files that the fastscp was used.

I have a primary copy which using incremental for ever.
Now i would like to have that same data on the other side.
But the problem is that the initial transfer will be too big to finish in time. (the first full is 1,7TB and the incr's are only 60GB
Is there a way to transfer the initial backup by USB or something.

Hi, Hans, yes you can perform initial seed using USB driver. After that, you can map the corresponding backup job to the already copied data. Thanks.

thanks but how? Just copy the files from the main copy?

1) Create repository at target site.
2) Copy backup data to it, using USB drive.
3) Rescan the repository.
4) Create a new backup job, specifying the said repository as a target for it.
5) Map the newly-created job to the previously copied backup data.
