Backup Retention

Post by mblackmore »

Hi

I am wanting to verify our setup as i have recently made some changes and want to confirm.

I want to do the following

Run Daily backups and keep 7 days worth on disk at a time (on a local disk)
Run Monthly backups and keep 1 month on disk at a time (on a local disk)
Run Monthly backup copies and keep 3 months worth of backups at a time (on a remote NAS)
Run Monthly backup copies to tape (retention is based on media allocation)

So, These jobs are running, and appear to be working, but i am confused on the retention policies within the jobs.

I want to be able to do the following

Restore any days backup for atleast 1 months worth (I am assuming the daily backup job with 31 restore points works for this? or is there a better way)
Restore a monthly backup from disk or tape (montly running with 1 restore point), with the added bonus of 3 months being kepts on a NAS (monthly copy running with 3 restore points)

Michael, yes, seems that you simply need to change retention on your daily backup job to 31 to be able to restore to any day within the last month.
