Backup server virtual or physical VMware environment
Hello friends,
I have a physical server with 32GB, One Xeon CPU and SAS disks to store local backups.
I read that it is recommended that the backup server be created in the virtual environment and the physical one I use only as a proxy and repository.
I want to know if I really need to create a virtual server for the backup routine or if I can use the physical server to do all the functions (backup, proxy and repository).
Thanks.

Re: Backup server virtual or physical VMware environment
Hello,
Just install everything on your one server avoids chicken-egg problems. I would never split roles in such a small environment. My rule of thumb is: up to 1000 VMs everything to an all-in-one system. Virtual backup server only if it is running on a geo-redundant storage with transparent failover.
Best regards,
Hannes
I don't know who recommended that, but for your kind of environment it makes no sense to me.that it is recommended that the backup server be created in the virtual environment

@HannesK
I thought that too, so as I know you have more experience I decided to ask here.
I will continue with everything on the same server.
Thanks.

Re: Backup server virtual or physical VMware environment
Hi,
I talked to the engineer veeam who made this proposal and he claims that by separating the functions I will have CPU benefits in the processing of backup routines.
So, now I need to make this separation.
I have already installed everything on the physical server.
What do I do now? Do I remove everything from the physical server?
Or can I just install Veeam on a virtual server? Can I select only the backup server function during setup?
Thanks.

Re: Backup server virtual or physical VMware environment
Hello,
veeampb.com gives sizing recommendations on each component (backup server, sql server, proxy server, repository server which are all-in-one in your situation).
vse.veeambp.com does the math for you as alternative
https://propartner.veeam.com/vm-sizing/ is a simplified version of vse.veeambp.com if you are a Veeam partner
If you want to split roles, then I would start from scratch. And I recommend to read about the Veeam infrastructure components https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=100
According to the kind of questions you ask, I guess that the all-in-one server would be fine. I would upgrade the hardware before splitting roles. But yes, everything depends on the backup window and amount of data of course.
Best regards,
Hannes
I recommend to do the calculation on your own. As you did not provide the relevant numbers, I cannot tell you how much resources you really need. What do I do now?
