Backup VMs from HPE Synergy
Probably been asked before
Was wondering what people are doing for backing up in the 'off host' style from a HPE Synergy frame.
If you have a VM running on an internal D3940 storage module what is the best line of attack for getting the VM data off the internal storage module sitting inside the Synergy frame?

Re: Backup VMs from HPE Synergy
Hello,
if I remember correctly, they are presented as local disks to the blades. Correct?
So there is no SAN to use some kind of "direct SAN" mode?
Best regards,
Hannes

Re: Backup VMs from HPE Synergy
Not really.
The whole concept behind the HPE Synergy system is that it pools resources. So you can run the servers (blades) without any drives installed, they can run off pooled storage enclosed elsewhere in the blade chassis. The D3940 holds only physical disks and acts as the storage pool for the chassis. Like a SAN, but inside the blade chassis.

Re: Backup VMs from HPE Synergy
then it's the same like any other SAN. zoning & masking to the proxies and go for direct SAN modeLike a SAN
I guess you use VMware: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... l?ver=95u4
If you use Hyper-V: stay with on-host proxy
But I still don't believe that it is "like a SAN". Because I know a customer who is using Synergy with the shelves you mention (I don't know the exact type / product number) and they use it for VSAN. That means it cannot be something like a traditional iSCSI / FC SAN

Re: Backup VMs from HPE Synergy
Yes, looks like the most straight-forward way of doing it would be to put Veeam inside the Synergy frame and backup and replicate from there. Then make backup copies to external repositories.
