Backup VMware and Hyper-V VMs in the same job

Hi,

I'm running Veeam v12.0.0.1420. My Veeam's backup infrastructure/Inventory has my ESXi hosts and Hyper-V hosts configured. I am migrating some VMs from the ESXi hosts to the Hyper-V hosts and would like to keep the migrated VMs in their existing respective backup jobs, but it seems that I cannot have both ESXi and Hyper-V hosts in the same job, is that right?

If I have to create brand new "Hyper-V" backup jobs for the migrated VMs, will that break their existing backup chains and have to commence with new backup chains? My backup repository might run out of free capacity if I have to start with new chains, each starting with a new full backup.

Any help/guidence is most appreciated, thanks.

Hi George,

It's not possible to add ESXi hosts and Hyper-V to the same backup job, as it will be 2 different backup objects, which can't be combined.

But for migration from VMware to Hyper-V you can use Instant Recovery feature and follow the steps:
1) Perform migration via Instant Recovery
2) Publish migrated VMs to production
3) Create a new backup job for migrated VM and make a full backup.

If you still need your outdated backups of VMware, you can store on some external repository or somewhere else.

Hi Marina, thanks for confirming that. It's a shame ESXi and Hyper-V VMs can't be in the same backup job.

Your migration steps are exactly what I am doing I just need to add a new backup repository for new backup jobs of the migrated VMs because as you pointed out they'll start with full backups and we don't have sufficient space on the current repo.
