Bad CRC / Case #03793159

Post by KarlKohn »

Hy!

We face a strange problem now with our backups. In our company we use Cisco Hyperconverged Server nodes with Vsphere. Our Backup repository is a Qnap 8 Bay NAS.

After some recovery tests we face that our backups get corrupted in a random way and we got checksum failures.
Now we recreated some backupjobs and try it over ISCSI and CIFS but now we get this failure instant in the validation test.
Validation failed.
The following VMs are corrupted:
1. 'MWNSRISC01': File "MWNSRISC01-flat.vmdk" is corrupted. Failed to decompress LZ4 block: Bad crc (original crc: cda119b4, current crc: 57e2ac40).
We try the Health Check Storage Guard Protection but if the new incremental is written the backup gets corrupted again with bad crc.

Does anyone have the same issue? We suspect its the QNAP NAS with the new FW but we didn't really know.
Maybe someone else has the same problem with QNAP?

VSphere Version 6.5.0.23000
QNAP TVS-872XT /FW v4.3.6 Build 20190919 / RAID 6 / 6x HDD WDC WD60EFRX-68L0BN1 6TB
Veeam 9.5.4.2753

Support Case # 03793159

Thanks for help!

Hello,
and welcome to the forums
Our Backup repository is a Qnap 8 Bay NAS.
Does anyone have the same issue?
yes - that combination: SMB share and low-end NAS (no matter whether it is Qnap or any other SOHO storage vendor) is the most common reason for corrupted backup files. The solution is proper hardware, with ideal solution on low end being Windows or Linux server with a bunch of disks.

Best regards,
Hannes
