Hello,
Could you please advise on the best on-premises storage solutions for Veeam Backup & Replication, ideally with immutability support?
Currently, I'm using a Synology DS1621+ NAS via iSCSI with 14TB, but it's reaching capacity.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Re: Best on-prem storage options for VBR with immutability
Hi Tochen,
Veeam Backup & Replication supports different types of immutable backup storage:
- Veeam Hardened Repositories
- Object Storage
- DataDomain or StoreOnce deduplication appliances
While we can't give you exact recommendations on which hardware or solution to buy, we can help suggest which type of repository might be best for your needs.
Assuming you're asking about your primary backup jobs, I recommend looking at our Hardened Repository. You'll need a hardware server with internal disks, and the Linux OS can be easily deployed using our Hardened Linux ISO. Please first check the requirements for our ISO.
For backup copy job immutability, I would go with a hardened repository or an object storage appliance. You can also use cloud object storage services such as Veeam Data Cloud Vault or any other service provider (AWS, Azure, Wasabi, etc.). Another option is a Veeam Cloud Connect Provider, which provides backup immutability through Insider Protection or storage immutability.
The benefit of an object storage appliance is that you can also use it for immutable backups in your Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 deployment.
Best,
Fabian
