Best way forward

Post by gingerdazza »

Hi. My Veeam server is currently a DL380 Gen9 with a P840 Smart Array Controller and 12x4TB 7.2k SATA drives in RAID50.
I need to obtain more capacity and performance.

We have a server becoming spare very soon which is...
HP DL380P Gen8
Direct SAS connection to HP MSA 2040 with 24x1TB 7.2k HDDs plus an extra D2700 disk shelf chained onto it with another 24x1TB 7.2k HDDs.

So, I'm wondering how to get the best out of this?

Should I install Windows on the spare server, configure another RAID50 on it, add it as a separate repository, and setup Performance based SOBR?

Would like to receive any advice...

PS there's no iSCSI capability on this MSA.

Hello,
I`m curious why you decided to upgrade backup server. Do you use it as backup proxy and repository as well?
What does bottleneck statistics say?
Thanks!

Hi,
The Veeam server is both a BP and a Rep, yes. Bottleneck is source, but my main issue is merge time on Forward Forever. I want to change it to a different mode but can't without extra capacity, so looking for advice on the best way to add the spare storage......

Any suggestions about the best way to make use of this extra storage?

If bottleneck is source, your main issue is not merge on the target.
What transport mode is used for the backup jobs?
Thanks!

... don't agree.
The backup "bottleneck" only refers to the bottleneck during the actual backup process. It does not factor in the merge because the merge only has one place where it happens - the repository. My merge time is my main challenge here, so my original points still apply. The problem with my merge time is not my backup source.

Any assistance on the best way to utilise this spare storage gratefully received

SOBR configured with Performance policy should help.
