I recently downloaded the 4.1.1 eval and I am currently testing by running it in a 2003 server VM on a Vsphere 4 host. I have a licensed (Essentials) Vsphere ESX host.
I am able to backup in VMware VStorage API "network" mode but not in "Virtual Appliance" mode. The Vsphere Client gives the following errors:
The Vsphere client "Status" error shows: "There are insufficient licenses to complete this operation" and when I click on "View Details" it says "There are insufficient licenses to complete this operation. Feature hotplug not licensed, requires need have have"
What type of license does "Virtual Appliance" mode require? Or am I missing something?
Thanks.

Re: Can't use virtual appliance mode
Frank, do you have latest vSphere version (Update 1)?

Re: Can't use virtual appliance mode
That was it. Once I upgraded to update 1 it worked beautifully.
