How to enabled Direct SAN Access (Case # 00602231)
Hi,
I want to enable direct SAN-access with Veeam as I was told this would improve my backups significantly.
Here is my infrastructure:
EMC VNX 5300 ( Fibre Channel SAN)
EMC Clarrion NS20 ( Fibre Channel SAN)
Windows 2012 Veeam Proxies with Local Repositories.
I am however not able to follow the steps below:
> --http://www.veeam.com/kb1446
>
> --
> http://www.veeam.com/blog/using-the-isc ... -a-vm.html
I cannot see the SAN.
Any Ideas?
Thanx.
El

Hello El,
Have you connected your SAN storage via FC adapter to physical backup proxy servers? Do you see any LUNs in Windows disk management snap-in?
Thank you!

You should probably hire a consultant who knows what they're doing. The last thing you want to do is to mess up your vmfs datastores.

No, we do not have a physical connection between a physical proxy and the FC channnel. We have 3 proxy servers of which one is physical and the rest virtual.

Eldridge, if you want to use Direct SAN mode, you need to have connection via FC from storage to proxy servers. Please review system requirement for direct SAN mode > Direct SAN Access Mode

The Attending Engineer of this Case is saying that I can still make a connection via a VM to the FC Storage. This does not seem right though?

You need to have a FC adapter plugged in to the proxy server. Since this is not possible to do with VMs, then the only way to use direct SAN mode with virtual proxy servers is to use iSCSI interface. Does your storage support iSCSI? If not, then the second best choice for you is to configure virtual proxy servers in HotAdd backup mode. This should give you decent performance as well.
