Changing VM's for another with the same name

Post by trevora »

We will be soon be replacing a Windows VM here with another, but we want to keep the same Windows and VM name. My understanding is that Veeam uses MorefID to track VM's, so we can remove a VM and replace it with another with the same name with no problems.

However, what happens with regards to how this appears within Veeam? For example, we run daily reverse incrementals across 4 jobs covering all of our servers, with the relevant servers being specifically named within each backup job. Say, JobA backs up 3 servers, SRV_A, SVR_B and SVR_C. The Windows SRV_A is removed and replaced with a different server with the same VM name. Presumably we would have to remove SRV_A from the backup job and then add it back in again to pick up the new server and forget the old?

And then what happens with regard to restore points? How would we differentiate between backups if, for example, a week later we realise we need to recover something from the original SRV_A? How would that appear in the restore list - would we see two SRV_A servers with different restore points?

Thanks in advance

Yes, after re-adding the VM Veeam B&R will start backing up the new one. The old VM will be a subject to deleted VMs retention.

Yes, there will be two records for those VMs in Veeam B&R console and you will be able to select the required restore point for restore.
