Cloud Connect recommended specs

Post by blockert »

Hey All,

I was looking to do an overhaul of a self hosted Cloud Connect infrastructure and was looking for a bit of guidance on the recommended system specs give our current tenant size.

The current configuration is as follows -
Win2012R2 VM acting as VBR server, proxy, gateway server for repos, and cloud gateway
8 vCPU
50GB RAM
9 iSCSI attached repos (hosted on 3 QNAPs) acting as storage targets for tenants
4 concurrent tasks per repo
126 tenants
281 total tenant jobs

This current config allows for about 40-50 concurrent tasks (probably already over-provisioned) before it falls flat on its face.

My thoughts were to scale out to 1 VBR server, 2 proxies, and 2 cloud gateways but was unsure if the normal VBR system requirements (https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=110) were accurate when it comes to Cloud Connect infrastructure.

Any input or thoughts are appreciated. Thanks for reading!

Hello and Welcome to Veeam R&D Forums!

Yes, the system requirements for Veeam B&R are applicable in this case. You can also review this page for additional requirements for SP backup server.

I think it's a reasonable idea to add more proxies because the actual recommendation is to have 2 concurrent tasks per 1 CPU core. Moreover, if the same server has several roles (f.e. proxy and repo), it must be able to process the cumulative number of tasks specified for different roles. Since the server has roles of proxy and repository, this cumulative number of parallel tasks will be (9 * 4) + proxy_concurrent_tasks_ setting, therefore it's expected that a single server with its current config is not able to handle properly such an amount.

Not sure that you really need to add more gateways because they should not consume a lot of resources, for instance a single connection takes approximately 512 KB of memory.

By the way, you can also review this reference architecture, you'll find there a lot of useful information.

Thanks!

Also, it's recommended that you apply Veeam Cloud Provider group, using Usergroup settings in the User Control Panel. This's needed to get access to dedicated cloud providers' forum where similar questions are discussed. The topic will be moved there shortly. Thanks!
