Confused with Forever Forward Incremental

Post by mdwasim »

Hello Guys,

I am new to Veeam BR and its concept of backing up VMs, I need your help to understand it.
I am taking a FF backup of a file server.
The retention for the job is 10, and backup job runs every 24 hours. so that is 1 vib per day.
1st backup is Full, rest of the 9 backups will be incremental.
11th backup will merge 2nd vib into full vbk file.
Lets say I have few .docx files created everyday.
on 4th day I have total 4 files backed up, before running 5th backup files of 2nd and 3rd day is deleted on file server.
Now the 5th job run and backup will not consist of those deleted files (2nd and 3rd)
later 4th and 5th .vib merges into .vbk
now I need to restore those file 2nd and 3rd file after 20 days i.e., after complete chain is merged into .vbk
will it be possible to get them?

Thank you for the time guys.

No, you will not be able to recover the files. You only have nine days of retention.

Hi,

Every .vib reflects a state of the VM at the particular point in time, so you can't perform restore if there are no points left containing those files in backup chain. Thanks!
