Continious Backup with Montlhy increments

Post by aantonacci@shci.ca »

Hi Guys,

I am wondering if we can do this type of setup using VEEAM.

I would like to have a 4 Month cloud backup, but have 30 day increment updated every day.
for example, say we are Nov 10th and our monthly is set for the 1st
I would have:
Full backup dated Aug 1st
Sept 1st monthly incremental file
Oct 1st monthly incremental file
Nov 1st monthly incremental file
Nov 9th incremental file from 1st to 9th of the month. (every day this file gets updated until the fist of the next month)

That way in the event of a catastrophic failure I would have at least "yesterday backup"

I'm also curious on how does veam do a daily backup job + monthly copy job? does it merge all backup incremental of the previous month then upload one file?

Hello,
Nov 9th incremental file from 1st to 9th of the month.
uhm, Veeam creates a new file for each backup run.
does it merge all backup incremental of the previous month then upload one file?
no. I recommend to start with the quick start guide https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=100 to get used to the product.

If you like to copy your data to the cloud (I assume that you mean object storage), then I recommend this section of the user guide and the FAQ

If I got it right, then you need the following configuration
1) scale out repository with capacity tier in "copy" mode (move is optional if you don't need the monthly backups locally)
2) a backup job that runs daily with 30 days, weekly synthetic or monthly active full, and 4 monthly GFS restore points

backup job configuration can be found here: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=100

I also recommend using REFS for your repository: https://www.veeam.com/blog/advanced-ref ... suite.html

Best regards,
Hannes
