Current number of VM limitations

Post by Lukas-K »

Hi forum,
My task is to compare Veeam to CommVault and other vendors and I am currently trying to figure out the limitations of VBR regarding the maximum number of VMs (and workloads etc.) that can be backed up.
In my opinion the configuration database will be a limiting factor and the hardware sizings of Proxy and Repository, also including network etc.
Can limitations be declared in general? It will be depending on the deployment scenario but there has to be any value that can be compared to competitors...

Thanks in advance!

Hi, Lukas. You're right, the configuration database type (PostgreSQL or Microsoft SQL Server), it's edition in case of Microsoft SQL Server, as well as the hardware of the server running the database are the primary limiting factors. So much variability, with Microsoft SQL Server in particular.

These days we recommend PostgreSQL for new deployments. It's current limitations happen to be documented right in the What's New document for 12.1:
PosgreSQL database scalability — following multiple optimizations based on support cases from early
V12 adopters, V12.1 doubles the recommended scalability limit of using PostgreSQL as a configuration
database, and based on extensive V12.1 performance testing is now supported for backup servers
protecting up to 10,000 machines with up to 1,000 concurrent tasks.
If you have more thank 10,000 machines than normally you just add more backup servers and use the Veeam Backup Enterprise Manager for centralized management.

Hope this helps.
