DD BOOST can not detect on my veeam server
Dear all
Hi
i am using last version of veeam B&R. My veeam backup and replication is on virtual machine also using data domain as repository .Actually i have added all of my wwpn to datadomain and now it has access to all of my esxi hosts but while i search in device manager could not find any device as DD BOOST . what is the problem ?

Best would be to add the datadomain via the new backup repository wizard as described in our user guide.
This way the settings will be correct and u can send backups there.

Re: DD BOOST can not detect on my veeam server
thanks.
but my issue is , can not see ddboost in device manager . As I previously said my data domain server not connect directly to veeam data domain connected to san switch and also veeam server that is virtual machine and connected to that san switch . i can see my initiators (wwpn) in emc data domain but veeam cannot detect ddboost

Sounds like you are using DD Boost over fibre channel. If so, the Veeam gateway server will need to be a physical host connected via FC. By default the VBR server is the gateway, but since your VBR server is virtual you won't be able to see the FC environment.

Is that your means i had to run other machine and put gateway on that ?

Yes you will need a physical server to act as the gateway, and that server needs FC connectivity to the DD.

Re: DD BOOST can not detect on my veeam server
thanks
but i don't want use physical server . i have just virtual machines . on the other hand , before that i used pass through my HBA card on a virtual machine and used it for datadomain and worked excellent but now i can not pass through my HBA card on new server but all of my HBA card and datadomain's port connect to same san switch and can see the other . now in this mode i want use ddboost

Then I'd recommend using the Data Domain over the network instead of FC. That would allow you to use a virtual gateway server and still leverage DD Boost.

Re: DD BOOST can not detect on my veeam server
Thanks
but i need use that over FC in my environment .
Actually i want to know if i use veeam as a virtual machine and don't use direct connection between veeam and data domain it cannot use over FC ?
Is that your means we can just use ddboost over FC in 2 type:
1- while veeam has been installed on a physical server
2- while gateway has been installed on physical server
3-while veeam has been installed on a vm and pass through that HBA card

Re: DD BOOST can not detect on my veeam server
Correct, if the Veeam gateway for the DD is a virtual machine you can't use it over FC. The only officially supported method is a physical gateway server. You may be able to use a VM if the FC HBA is passed through to the VM or you may be able to use NPIV but it wouldn't be supported. Performance will likely also suffer.

Re: DD BOOST can not detect on my veeam server
1- Can i use NPIV for ddboost instead of pass through or physical gateway ?
2- if i use NPIV for ddboost will my backup traffic crossing via HBA card ?
3- will decrease veeam performance if use NPIV ?

3- will decrease veeam performance if use NPIV ?

Re: DD BOOST can not detect on my veeam server
As Joe has already mentioned, the only officially supported way is using a phyiscal gateway server. For a VM, you can try either pass-through or NPIV. (I've never tried NPIV for this) For either method to work, your VM must see the FC-HBA in Device Manager. We have pass-through in our Lab setup, which requires a dedicated HBA. You cannot use that physical HBA for normal FC Disk access on you ESX host. Once the VM sees this HBA you need to zone that HBA (and only that HBA) to the DD FC ports. There is no point in zoning the HBAs of the ESX Hosts to the DD. Create an Access Group on the DD (Protocols -> DD Boost -> Fibre Channel) and add the WWPNs. Create several (4-8) devices for that group, so it can create parallel streams on the gateway server to maximise throughput. Then on the next rescan it should see the DD Boost Devices.
If you use NPIV you'll be sharing the resources of the HBA, which will affect performance. Disk and Tape I/O should be kept on separate HBAs for better performance. "Tape I/O" in this case is streaming sequential I/O to the DD Boost devices, compared to random I/O for disk access.
Regards,
Stephen

Re: DD BOOST can not detect on my veeam server
i want use npiv for that and did these steps :
1- create new wwwn , wwwpn on my veeam virtual machine as follow
1 Node WWN:
28:29:00:0c:29:00:00:01
1 Port WWN:
28:29:00:0c:29:00:00:02
2- enable npv on my san switch
DSA-9706-1# show feature | include npiv
npiv 1 enabled
and reside veeam server in a zone that contain my data domain and veeam and hots's hba
but cannot see that wwpn in my data domain

Re: DD BOOST can not detect on my veeam server
You should only need the WWPN of the NPIV (28:29:00:0c:29:00:00:02) in the zone with the DD FC Port(s)
Do you see the HBA listed in device manager on your Veeam VM? Is the HBA logged in to the SAN? (do you see it in the fabric name server - I don't know the commands or where to search on a Cisco MDS Switch)

also i put wwpn 28:29:00:0c:29:00:00:02 in the same zone with HBA card and data domain
