Deduplication of encrypted volumes
Hello,
I have been researching encrypting volumes, its that "Data at Rest" issue... Anyway, I was told that deduplication cannot work on encrypted volumes. Is this true?
Second question regarding Encrypted volumes, is there a big performance hit when Veeam backups an encrypted volume?
Thanks for your help,
Tom

Re: Deduplication of encrypted volumes
Tom, yes, encrypted data cannot be deduplicated. Backup performance is not affected by encryption.

Re: Deduplication of encrypted volumes
Not only that, but encrypted volumes generally cannot be compressed either. This can indirectly have a negative impact on overall backup performance simply because you have to write much more data to the target storage.

Thanks guys, This is very helpful.
That answers the question of just encrypt everything response

[MERGED] V8, encryption and deduplication
Hi all,
With the awesome new ability in V8 to encrypt Veeam backups, what are the implications for storing Veeam backups on deduplicated volumes? We currently store our Veeam backups on a Quantum DXi device with deduplication and I'm wondering if enabling encryption in Veeam will prevent backups from being deduplicated?
The same question also applies for those of us who might be backing up to a Windows 2012 deduplicated volume.
Cheers,
Collodion

Re: Deduplication of encrypted volumes
Correct, encryption will "break" all external data reduction techniques, including deduplication.
This is not the case with Veeam B&R built-in compression though, as we compress that data before we encrypt it.

[MERGED] : Server 2012 Dedup and Encryption
Is it supported to send encrypted backup copy jobs to a Server 2012 R2 de-duplicated volume?

Re: Deduplication of encrypted volumes
You can send encrypted data blocks to dedupled volume, they won't be deduped, though. Thanks.
