defer backup point merges to a set time?

Post by Battlestorm »

Hi, this is probably more of the feature request.
is it possible to defer the backup point merges to a set time as we have a backup job that only just about completes and runs it merge before it's due to start again, on occasion it overruns, the job only runs during the day so we have plenty of time to let it merge overnight.

as alternative work around would be if we can set via script to pre merge older backups down overnight so that we don't hit the restore point limit during the day.

The idea here is to shrink the backup chain, as soon as the retention is reached. Thus, transform happens once the backup chain hits retention. Couldn't you tweak the schedule, so that, backup job takes place closer to night and transformation occurs during desired nightly period?

it's line of business app, so the client wants regular backups during the day.

do you know if there are any powershell commands that i can use to force the chain to merge down overnight?
even if it's changing the chain length starting processing and then increasing it again?

Why not switch to simple forward incremental and schedule synthetic full with transformation of previous restore points to rollbacks for each day so that it occurred during the first job run overnight?
