Deleting storage snapshots

Post by Luke_TCX »

Hello,
we are using NetApp with VMware datastores on HDD and SSD, FC connected.
I just started using storage snapshots for our backups.
That is great feature, it make the difference, but there is one thing, default behavior for deleting storage snapshots
when one job takes vm's from two different datastores.
Snapshots are deleted, all together, at the end of job, no matter, how long it takes for each one datastore.

Could process delete them individually, after last vm from specific datastore is copied?

There is no problem for short, incremental jobs, but monthly, full job takes few or more hours.
Then vm's from SSD datastore are copied way faster than vm's from HDD, but snapshot on SSD grows up (in our case very fast)
till the end of whole job.

Is it necessary? Is there any way to change this behavior?

Of course, way around is to split the jobs for HDD and SSD, but we would like to avoid this.

Hi, thanks for the feedback - currently there's no way to change this behavior but we have this request in mind.

Hi, thanks for the answer, I will wait for solution and consider workaround for now.

Hello,
On Netapp AFFxxx, consumption of the temporary snapshot is canceled by deduplication on the aggregate. So it's not important.
To reduce retention and the number of snapshots taken, the easiest way is to do 1 job per volume by setting "Limit processed VM count."
Advantage, all VMs on the same storage are backed up at the same time.

Hi,
things works slightly different, than you describe, in our case at least, but any way, you found best workaround, for now. Thanks @totoche.
Option "Limit processed VM count per storage snapshot" can trigger snapshots deletion on all involved datastores few times per job, not only at the end.
This is not a perfect solution, but it is sufficient for now.
