Direct NFS Access and Backup from NetApp SnapVault

Post by bbibber »

I'm quite excited about these v9 features as we use NFS on our NetApp system. At the moment we rely on "Virtual Appliance mode" to do our backups.
We used SnapVault before switching to Veeam so it would be nice to see this investment not to be wasted.
What kind of performance boost can we expect, the same as Direct SAN mode?

Sincerely
Guy

It depends on the hardware and network connection you have within your infrastructure, but direct NFS access should be comparable to direct SAN mode. Thanks!

Thanks for your reply, Vitaliy.

After a bit of thinking I wonder if the (re)use of SnapVault comes with an trade-off as Veeam's Application Aware Image Processing will not be used then?

I am not sure I follow how SnapVault relates to Direct NFS topic. But generally speaking, Veeam certainly can populate SnapVault with application-aware images even today (and in v9, also backup from it).

Anton, As a NetApp user I was happy to see those two features, and also the just announced advanced Oracle integration :-)
For SnapVault we used a tool from NetApp, SMVI to backup to SnapVault volumes. Of course, this tool won't do the application aware "magic". Great to hear NetApp can use SnapVault without additional NetApp tools. We will definitely look into this feature :-)

Sincerely
Guy
