Disable snapshots on SAN ?

Post by docfc »

Hello,

i use vsphere 5.1, B&R 7, an equallogic SAN and a separate backup server.

May i disable the snapshot feature on each volume on the SAN ? Snapshot reserve takes a lot of space on the SAN.

Thanks.

Hello,

I think your question is about best practices and more to Dell than to Veeam.

Nevertheless, do you currently take snapshots(if yes, why)?

There was a similar topic in VMware community. And the answer was(free form): "It depends on your needs. If you want to use SAN just for backups, you can set the snapshot reserve space to 0 and move on."
Also please keep in mind that SAN snapshots are not backups.

Thanks.

I don't use them on SAN. I use only veeam for our backups & snapshots. The storage cost is much lower on the backup server than on the equallogic.

Ok i think i'll disable them on SAN.

Great.
So, I believe disabling will not cause any issues.
Thanks.

Having used Equallogics, if you are not using the feature you can definitely disable it.

You can also tweak the reserved snapshot space way down if you are leery of disabling entirely.

OK snapshot reserve has been put to 0%.
It works great.
Thanks for your feedback.
