DR without Replication

Post by ddockter »

I'm new to Veeam Backup (still doing an eval, but will probably switch from vRanger). I'm in the processes of documenting a DR strategy using Veeam without replication. I'm going to be doing synthetic fulls with the "transform previous full" option. I'll be copying my backups to tape each night. In the event of a disaster, I'll restore the backups from tape. From there it appears there are several options. What seems to be the cleanest is to restore my Veeam Backup server VM with the Extract utility, and then restore my other VM's using the restored Veeam Backup server. Are there other/better strategies?

Hi Doug, your approach would work. But easiest and cleanest way would be to just install new temporary Veeam Backup server (setup takes 5 min), then import existing backups into it (via Import Backup command), and then restore all required VMs using GUI and wizards. Thanks.

Does this method also work when importing and restoring from full/incremental backup sets?

Yes, backup mode does not matter.

Just for my understanding, how do incrementals get associated with the appropriate full backup on an import. Is there something inside the incremental file that points it back to the full backup?

No... in v5, incrementals are associated with full using just the file names.
