EMC DD and Veeam v8 New Setup

Post by Ace T »

We have just implemented EMC DD and have chosen to backup less than 300 VMs via the datastore method. This means we now have 61 jobs instead of a lot smaller number when we were backing up by VM. We start all daily jobs at the same time and all weekly jobs at the same time. We also have carved out 4 backup repositories instead of 1 for the EMC DD unit.

Can I ask if this is best practice or are there better ways as currently we are finding that jobs are not always successful and on our initial backups they are struggling to complete.

Any tips would be good.

Hello Amit,
First of all let`s find out what issues you experience.

What errors/warnings do you see during the backup processes?

That is not the best practice in terms resource utilization to start all jobs at the same time.
Could you also provide the bottleneck statistics and processing rate?
Additional improvement can also be achieved if you use less jobs i.e. combine more VMs to the same job, for better deduplication results. It`s recommended to pick vms of same OSes and applications for backup jobs.
Thanks!

Amit,
Have you disabled inline deduplication for that reason? Best practices about EMC DD were discussed in several topics(One, Two). Please review.
Recommendation not to schedule jobs at the same time remains in force. All other questions are relevant too. Thanks!
