Empty space in VM affect backup and/or replication

I have many VMs (approx 12 VMs) that were allotted a large data drive (usually OS is one vHDD with 80GB-100GB, then 2nd vHDD depends on requirement).
But recently most admins (new projects) asked for VMs with 100GB with 400GB to 800GB "2nd vHDD" but only uses like 5GB to 10GB in the 2nd vHDD (pre-data migration)....but the migration maybe delayed by 6-12 months (still deciding how many yrs of data to migrate).

So will the backup, backup copy (to 2nd storage), backup copy (to remote site) & replication (using remote site backup copy to remote site ESXi) be affected as the VMs are all using think provisioned lazy zeroed storage (vHDD) ....as compared if I just give them 100GB + 100GB ?
