Enterprise vs. Standard: Backup and Replication product

Post by tom11011 »

I have a question regarding the enterprise vs. standard product.

I understand the enterprise product will allow you to restore individual database items, tables, databases, etc.. because it is application aware, much more easier than the standard product.

However with Standard, is my understanding correct that a sql 2008 database will be backed up ok and be able to be restored ok as part of restoring the entire vm? You would just have to restore the entire VM to get to the database?

Basically, I'm trying to confirm that my sql server 2008 backups are ok with the standard product.

Hi tom

Yes you are right.
The backup process is the same.

With enterprise license you can Start the Server in the Lab and restore Single objects.(vmware)
Standard can restore the enitre VM, or guest files.

Right, with the standard product you can restore a SQL database without restoring the entire VM by using a file level restore. You simply unmount the SQL database, restore the MDF and LDF files, and then mount the database. The enterprise product provides the ability to restore rows in a table or tables within a database, but restoring entire databases is actually the same between the standard and enterprise product.

Is there a provision (with the standard product) that would allow a restoral of the database mdf and ldf files from the backup as copies of the files to my desktop and not to the vm from where they came?
