Error on backup of DC with Veeam Backup 5

Any idea's

Windows 2003 DC - i get the following:

Freezing guest operating system
Error HRESULT E_FAIL has been returned from a call to a COM component.

Could you tell me if you had a successfull backup for this VM previously? By the way do you have any related errors in the guest OS Event logs?

Sounds like something is wrong with VSS framework on this computer, or may be whole system has some issues.
Do you see any issues running vssadmin list writers command?

Well version 4.1 of Veeam worked ok.

Version 5 is giving odd errors.

I tried to backup the Dc again, and this time it worked, however the second one failed with the same error above.

Another SQl server failed with the following error: Am doing a search on this now

Freezing guest operating system
VSSControl: Failed to freeze guest, wait timeout

On the DC itself, lots of these messages - though informational

The "vmGuestLibrary" is successfully initialized for this Virtual Machine.

Well...taking into consideration that this is an intermittent error, I would recommend digging into Windows Event Logs and examining the output of the vssadmin list writers on the guest VM to find the reason why you have "HRESULT E_FAIL has been returned from a call to a COM component" error.

Just open Windows Command Line to check the writers' status.

I get the same error when trying to backup my 2003 64bit veeam VM (basically backing itself up), so I'll watch this thread with interest

Steve, you cannot use Veeam VSS integration when using Veeam to backup itself... there are a number of topics around already since this was never supported. There are also topics discussing best practices and alternatives of backing up Veeam server. Thanks!
