Exchange 2010 email restore, Veeam 6.5

Post by mlynch3788 »

I am running Veeam B&R 6.5. I need to restore some emails from my Exchange 2010 server which I back up with Veeam. What is my best/easiest way to accomplish this? I haven't had to ever restore anything with Veeam, luckily, so I'm a little clueless.
Thanks!

Well...the best way would be to upgrade to either v7 or v8 and use Explorer for Exchange functionality to restore emails you need.

p.s. please keep in mind that v6.x is not longer supported.

Actually, Veeam Explorer for Exchange was available in Veeam B&R 6.5 as well, so no need to upgrade to use it. However upgrade to the latest version is indeed always recommended.

Vitaliy,

Thanks for the quick reply!
Would I be able to use the v7 or 8 explorer on a backup run by the v6.5 software?

Yes, backups created by previous versions can be imported in Veeam B&R console and used for restore.

Yes, the upgrade is pretty straightforward and you can upgrade directly to v8. The step-by-step procedure is outlined in the release notes document.

I can't recall whether the Veeam Explorer for Exchange was already built into the product in v6.5, but if you prefer to stay on this version a bit longer and do not see the corresponding menu item there, you can contact support to get the bits.

Yes, 6.5 was when we first introduced Veeam Explorer for Exchange.

So, when I try to use the Exchange restore in v6.5, I get an error that says "This functionality requires 64-bit operating system (Windows 2008 or later)". Is that true of v8, too?

The easiest way to move the backup server is using configuration backup functionality. Yes, Veeam B&R can be installed on the VM it is backing up.
