Exclude VM from Guest-Indexing

Post by d.artzen »

Hello together,

is it possible to exclude a specific VM from guest file indexing, if it is enabled in the backup job? I know that I can exclude a VM from malware scan and from the backup itself but have not found an option specific to guest file indexing.
The reason is, the backup job contains the complete Vcenter (with some VMs excepted and in then processed in specific jobs) and the guest file indexing is activated for the malware scan feature. This specific VM is our Windows 11 Test machine (to check if specific legacy software is Win 11 compatible) and until now we never had a problem. But after I did an In-Place Upgrade from 23H2 to 24H2 the backup job has a problem on that VM with the guest file indexing (running more than 16 hours when I cancelled the job) because it exhausts the allocated CPU and RAM.
I could exclude it from that job and create a new one, but it would be easier for me if I could just exclude it from the guest file indexing.

Thanks in advance
Daniel

Hi Daniel

Yes, you can exclude a single machine from guest file indexing. You can do it in the guest processing settings with the "indexing..." button.
But after I did an In-Place Upgrade from 23H2 to 24H2 the backup job has a problem on that VM with the guest file indexing (running more than 16 hours when I cancelled the job) because it exhausts the allocated CPU and RAM.
If you require guest file index based Malware detection on your test machine, then I recommend to investigate the performance issue with our customer support team. Maybe its an easy task to just reset the entire index and start from the beginning.

Hi Fabian,

thank you, for some reason I did not think I could add a VM since the vcenter itself was already shown there.
I do not need the malware scanning feature for this test VM, but I want it for the rest of the VMs in that job, which is the reason guest indexing was activated in that job when the Malware Scanning feature was introduced. So the exclusion is enough for me at this time.

Best regards
Daniel
