external datacenter vm copy

hi all
i have this scenario

my local network 143.161.56.0/23
my veeam server 143.161.56.18
my remote server have public ip 81.174.20.50 in the external datacenter
i have open all port from local network to remote public server

I have added first the server object in my servers list
second i have install and configure proxy server and repository for this remote server for backup my vm in the external server

i have then configure my backup job with remote repository , with WAN optimization

The problem is when i lunch my backup job fail
the error is: connectetion host failed

I think that the problem is that:

the remove repository try to respond to private veeam server , in my scenario is 143.161.56.18

I must create a vpn? there is other way? I would not create a vpn

Hi Christian, you really should create VPN if you care at all about your data, otherwise it will go over Internet unencrypted.
As for the error you are seeing, it is generic networking issue (such as firewall etc).

thanks for the answer
the problem is that che remote server with public ip can not answer to my private veeam server
i hoped to open ports only for outgoing and not and not for inbound traffic
for the clear traffic in this moment is not a problem because it is a test and i have limited the risk filtering the souce ip address

Two way communication is required, so you should either route all the traffic back to your backup server or use VPN connection between your sites. Thanks!
