Feature Request: Granular SQL Backups & RDM level backups

Post by mplsbkupguy »

MS SQL backups - Need more granular way to back SQL servers up. There needs to be a way to backup a subset of databases or instances on a single virtual machine. For example, if an SQL server has 2 instances, there needs to be a way to backup 1 and not the other. Similarly there should be a way to backup a subset of databases - for example let's say there are 5 databases on a single SQL server and the admin only wants to back up 3 of the 5. They should be able to specify this. If you incorporated the SQL agent into the Endpoint Backup, I believe you would be able to get this to work. The SQL backup would end up being a "file copy" type backup but the advantages of this would be a more granular level backup AND for customers that have RDM mounted drives for their SQL databases. This eliminate several obstacles in "selling" Veeam to enterprise level customers that are not going to redesign their SQL architecture to conform to a backup product.

Hi,

That makes sense. Though we don't have that enabled by default you can enable database exclusions using hidden registry key. Please check this KB for details.
AND for customers that have RDM mounted drives for their SQL databases
Just to clarify - are you talking about pure RDM or vRDM?

Thank you.

i'm talking about virtual machines that either have an RDM mounted LUN or in-guest iscsi attached drives.

Either one.

Since RDMs that are not in Virtual compatibility mode, and in-guest iSCSI drives cannot be snapshotted by means of VMware/Hyper-V host the only option would be to run an agent inside VM and backup it as if it was a physical machine. You can use Veeam Endpoint Backup for that.

Thank you.
