Feature request: Guest OS files/folder restore to a zip file
Hi!
When restoring Guest OS on a backup server (for example to c:\temp\restore) files and wanting to preserve file permissions it would be nice to be able to have restored folder in a zip file.
I'm currently in a situation where my veeam server is in a different domain than the backed up server. There is also no network connectivity between the servers. I want to restore a big folder, with somewhat complex permissions. I'd like restore this folder to a zip file, to be able to move it back to production server and unzip it there with proper permissions. Currently I dont have even read permissions to restored folder, if I want to preserver file/folder permissions.
Any workarounds also very welcome.
Win2012r2, VBR v9 u1
Thanks!

Hi,
AFAIK zip does not preserve permissions, you might want to try WinRAR for that as it has "save NTFS file permissions" checkbox. Please try to do the following:
1. Use "Copy To..."option to restore files + "Preserve permissions and ownership" checkbox.
2. Place all files in rar archive and move them wherever you want.
Thank you.

Re: Feature request: Guest OS files/folder restore to a zip
Hi and thanks for the tip!
However, I still cannot read the restored files without modifying their security. So would it be possible that vbr produced a rar-file containing the restored files/folders with their original security attributes?

If I correctly understood you, currently you can't even restore the folder because the account VBR server is running under does not belong to the domain and thus has no permission to read the folder, is that correct?
Thank you.
Thank you.

Hi!
Correct, I cannot restore to original location. I can use "copy to" option, to restore files. The VBR server and server being backed up are in different domains and in different networks (no network connectivity between those two).

Re: Feature request: Guest OS files/folder restore to a zip
I've just tested something. To restore the folder and keep permissions:
1. Perform Instant Recovery of the VM on your side
2. Login into that VM with an account that has enough permissions to read the folder you're willing to restore
3. Place the folder into .RAR archive on the same recovered VM and check "Keep permissions" checkbox in .RAR archive settings.
4. Move that .RAR to a flash-drive and unpack at the destination
Thank you.

Hi and thank you for your reply.
However, since I dont have access to datacenter where the Veeam is running, I cannot use any external media.

Is uploading the said archive to some file hosting service (instead of removable media) the option for you? Thanks.

No, not file hosting service. Normally I'd just copy it to my own computer (over rdp) and then copy it back to production.v.Eremin wrote:Is uploading the said archive to some file hosting service (instead of removable media) the option for you? Thanks.
