Feature request: IDR full host backup

Post by Poweruser »

I think this may be an old wish...
i can backup all the VMs but not the host.
if everything crashes i prefer to boot from iso image and then it should load all data from network or tape and restore the system without doing anything.
all drivers should be included in this bootable iso.

the backup has to include partition table, mbr, guid/gpt, etc..

if thats too much work, then just install windows with driver for storage+network+tape and then VBR or a smaller bootstrapper to get it work.

If you are on Hyper-V infrastructure, you can backup physical server with Veeam agent for Windows.
Thanks

Veeam is installed on 2016 datacenter which is the vm hyper-v host.
so it should be already installed and i think i can select it.

but will it backup partition tables, mbr/gpt and is it bootable?

You need to create our recovery media. This can be done on the original host and that will include the drivers for that host. The recovery media can be created as an ISO, on a DVD or similar. (See here: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/agent ... tml?ver=21)

On a empty machine, boot on the recovery media and then you can start the restore. In case of new hardware with different drivers, you can load the drivers (most likely network and storage drivers) first. Also, in "advanced mode" you can repartition if necessary and where possible. And obviously you can select the latest backup or any other point in time that you have for that host

Where is the entry Point? I installed B&R from the ISO, but i dont know if the Agent is installed automatically or not?
I just run the normal console?

Can i include the Drivers into the iso? if yes, good, if not would be nice to include storage drivers into the image to make it easier ICE

Yes, you certainly can include drivers into the Recovery Media.

I would kindly ask that you please review the User Guide, as all the questions you're asking are covered there with great details. Alternatively, you can contact our support and have them guide you through the entire process over the webex. Let's try to keep this forum for the questions that you cannot get answers from the User Guide and Support.

Thank you for understanding!

I read the guide, but the menu item is missing.
I think the agent is not installed with the default installation of B&R.

I installed it onto the Host and see 2 Managed Servers: Microsoft Hyper-V and Microsoft Windows.
So i think "Microsoft Windows" must be the local agent. (all veeam sw is running on one hyper-v host only)

Now i fear to install agent too, because it may cause trouble or already is installed/not needed.

Hey Poweruser,

With the agent we mean Veeam Agent for Windows. This is a solution to backup physical and cloud instances. I think what you are using now is B&R which is for VM's. You can find the information around Agents (and the integration with B&R) here: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/agent ... tml?ver=21

Will it be safe to install the agent on my all-in-one veaam B&R host with win2016 server hyper-v?
Or will it cause trouble if i install the agent on top?
so i would like to install the agent and can do a host backup too.
is the agent included in the license or do i have to buy an extra license for agent+b&r on one host?

Hey PowerUser,

Yes, installing the Veeam Agent on the VBR server is a supported configuration.

The agent itself is not included in the license. The pricing information is here: https://www.veeam.com/agents-windows-linux-pricing.html

Poweruser,

I'm by far an expert in licensing so I would suggest you contact your sales representative from Veeam.

Buying makes less sense in the new realities where Windows gets a significant update every 6 months - you really want to have a subscription for backup software to be eligible for updates. Having said that, watch this space - we're planning to roll out something interesting around agents in the coming months!

Yes maybe.. but i just use LTSC. These modern subscriptions and updates in so short periods are nonsense.
Primary we need to work and not to play with new features :-D
Anyway i choose 24/7 subscription for Backup Essentials which includes everything like Availabilty Suite.
But the Agent seems a bit too expensive compared to the Suite.
