Feature Request - Log file handling on VBR by date

Post by jjansson8220 »

Hi,

been running Veeam for a couple of years now and one thing that I think really needs improvment is the settings for log files and retention for these.
The settings avaliable in version 12 are just reflecting how large a log file is allowed to be before it is being archived (compressed) and how many of these files you want to keep: https://www.veeam.com/kb1825

However, to transform these settings to a timespan is an impossible task since different kind of logs are being created at different interavalls in the VBR infrastructure. I know there is a script (provided without support) to help you with the cleanup, but I really feel that this should be handled by a setting in the VBR GUI. As of now there is the history setting, but this only affects how long history is kept in the VBR database. I actually made an internal feature request to Veeam regarding this in a supportcase last year (case 07270945).

To make matters worse, the log files consumes quite a lot of space on the VBR server. And if a job is deleted, it's logs will be stored in the log-folder (defalut C:\ProgramData\Veeam\Backup) forever!

We've setup a manual clean up routine to wipe older log files but if you haven't I recommend you to take a look at the logfolder (and maybe raise a support-ticket to get advise!)

The biggest folder I've found on our VBR are:
* SOBR log-files
* System, were you have the folders Retention and CheckPoint Removal
It also seems that the root-folder is being floded with log files with names that seems to be some kind of guid. Example caaabc46__Svc.VeeamBackup.9.arc

If you also has connected your VBR to VeeamOne there is also a logfolder Export_logs that can grow over time!

Since we are running HyperV log-files is also present on the HyperV-servers, as logs are being created by the integration services needed. These thankfully don't seem to consume that much space.

Great feedback, Johan!

Definitely something to improve, and I have logged few work items to follow up with the team.

Thanks!
