Feature Request - Mix different Licences in Enterprise Manager

Post by Mofamike »

Hello,

we would like to create a VM with a central Enterprisemanager component for all of our VBR servers.
The problem is that our VBR servers are licensed differently:

1. VBR Server Rental – Business

2. VBR Server Rental – Enterprise Plus

3. VBR Server – Perpetual (Socket) – Enterprise

Now I have read that managing multiple VBR servers with different licenses cannot be managed via an Enterprise Manager.

https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=120
"“Keep in mind that you cannot use the same Veeam Backup Enterprise Manager server to manage backup servers that require different licenses, for example, a backup server of a Veeam Cloud Connect service provider and a regular backup server used to process Veeam Backup & Replication jobs.”"
In addition, I have already created a case for this: #07395393

This was confirmed here with the request to open a feature request in the forum.

Is there anything already planned for future versions / is it planned that an enterprise manager can regulate the license individually for each VBR server?

Thank you in advance.

Hello, definitely no such plans as it's actually directly against Veeam Licensing Policy to mix different Veeam licenses in the same production infrastructure.
1.13. Source Infrastructure
[...]With the exception of Veeam Data Platform Foundation/ Veeam Data Platform Advanced / Veeam Data Platform Premium VUL on a Subscription contract, sharing of the Source Infrastructure between different Licenses and license terms is prohibited.
In your specific case the issue is even bigger though, the fact that you mix Service Provider and End User licensing the same environment can only mean that either you or whoever sold you the Rental licenses violates some fine print of their VCSP agreement and the Rental licensing policy. Because with Rental licensing, the service provider is supposed to be the "primary user" managing and supporting the product installation... for example, only they are allowed to open actual support cases for Veeam installations licensed with Rental licenses etc.

Please note that Rental licensing is not just a different way to buy Veeam for end-users who does not "like" proper end-user licensing for whatever reason. Rather, it is designed for service providers who are delivering managed backup services. And it should never be used to circumvent acquiring proper end-user licensing, for cases when the primary user of the software is the actual end-user. Which I assume you are b/c I can't imagine you having different approaches to managing backups by your 3 backup servers?

Thanks

Thank you for the feedback and relevant information. In fact, the backup servers serve very different application scenarios. We are the primary administrator and mainuser of these licenses / software. Of course, I/we will discuss the topic in detail with our resellers/distributors in order to provide clarity as quickly as possible.
