Feature Request: NetApp Snap* for CIFS volumes

Post by orb » 2 people like this post

Hi

I made that request a while ago while moving customer from old DFM to Veeam. It would be nice to have this made available. Here is 2021 refresh!
  1. Scheduling and reporting for NetApp CIFS volumes (Snapshot-Only, SnapMirror, SnapVault)
  2. NAS Backup, use like a Snapshot/Snapdiff or SnapMirror/SnapVault on a destination as the source

Hello,
with both of your requests, you are not alone. So please take your requests as counted +1

A few details on your request
1. Veeam advocates the 3-2-1 rule. That means different media. SnapMirror / SnapVaults includes different physical boxes, but it's still inside the same eco-system. That means it's not really two different media. It is possible to schedule all of that directly on Netapp. No need to use a backup software for that.
2. Backup from SnapVault / SnapMirror works out of the box, if the path stays the the same. That's why we have the alternative path in the snapshots configuration (Backup from a native storage snapshot at the following path) https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=100

Backup from storage snapshots also works out of the box for SMB snapshots: https://www.veeam.com/blog/nas-backup-r ... ation.html. We will improve that further with V11. There we will use Snapshots also for NFS

SnapDiff: technically that's also no problem for V11. But Netapp does not allow SnapDiff usage for backup vendors for "real backup".

Hannes

@HannesK

Thank you for the reminder. We are indeed talking about pure integration features. I refrain to bring snaplock in the conversation :D

Veeam does already a fantastic which manage to give Snapdiff like functionalities. but I am surprised about the statement about NetApp. https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgece ... igure.html
This has been around since the TSM era

It looks like Commvaut too, https://documentation.commvault.com/com ... =35246.htm but there is a mention being 7-Mode only feature. Interesting

Hello,
I'm not sure what you mean with snaplock in this context :-)

Yes, existing vendors / integration can continue using SnapDiff for a certain limited amount of time. I don't have all the legal details.

From a technical perspective: we can do it. It's just a legal thing. Having that said, I recommend reaching out to your local Netapp representative on the topic. I would like to avoid discussing legal topics in public. Thanks for your understanding.

NDMP is a different story. Not related to file based backup

Hannesk,

Gotcha! Just for integration and central management for the win. Snapdiff can stay where it is.

Snaplock requirements don't make it an affordable, a pain to manage and you don't want it to see in a backup software :)
