Re: Transaction Logs in Backup Copy or Replica
Regnor,
May I ask if you are plan to store the transaction log backup for archive purposes (long term backup) or that's going to be secondary copy to tape for the short term backup? Thank you in advance!

Mainly for short term retention to ensure that the logs are always on 2 different backup media.

Re: Transaction Logs in Backup Copy or Replica
Anton wrote that most of the engine work had been done by that time and that we were trying to find a window to test the feature properly and release it afterwards.
We are yet to find this window (most likely, we're talking about next major release, but as always plans are subject to change).
Thanks!

Now that the release of the v10 is approaching, could you tell us if this feature is indeed coming?

Re: Transaction Logs in Backup Copy or Replica
Do you mean, it´s possible to create a backup copy job, and with this backup copy job database backups and according transactionlog backups are processed and copied to a secondary site with this job?

Re: Transaction Logs in Backup Copy or Replica
Hopefully you've found it in the correct place - backup copy in Immediate mode is capable of transaction logs processing.

yes, we configured Immediate mode with the transaction log processing feature. A long awaited feature...

Re: Transaction Logs in Backup Copy or Replica
Hi, Im a SQL DBA new to Veeam. Our sysadmins have set up server replication with a nightly server level backup and sql translogs backups via Veeam. They are under the impression that they can restore to the server level backup and then apply the SQL translogs which from my back ground working with SQL Native backups does not sound possible, I would of though you also needed a Veeam full sql backup daily also?

Re: Transaction Logs in Backup Copy or Replica
Hi Paul, that's correct, you need a SQL Server backup created by Veeam B&R to replay the logs. But since they do transaction logs backup with Veeam B&R, then they also have SQL backups created by Veeam B&R, as transaction logs cannot be backed up separately.

Re: Transaction Logs in Backup Copy or Replica
Hi,
Came across this topic while searching for something else but it's really interesting. Since it's also mentioning replication though, say we need to do daily backups for a SQL server, hourly log truncation and copy job, but also replication to a DR site 2-3 times per day.
If the replication job does log truncation too since Application Aware will be enabled, won't that have impact on the hourly log backups? Won't it cause issues?

Re: Transaction Logs in Backup Copy or Replica
Hi,
when you select 'copy only' for transaction log backups under application aware processing, no log truncation is being performed.
You can also choose to create the replica's from backups. This prevent snapshots being taken and committed on production VMs at the start and end of the replication and thus has no impact on the live VM.

Re: Transaction Logs in Backup Copy or Replica
Hello,
Just a small correction that there is no Copy-only mode for the replication job but anyway it would be best to run the replication from backup and delegate log truncation to the primary backup job.
UPDATE 02/08/2023: The Copy-only mode is available for the replication job, see this link.
Thanks!

Re: Transaction Logs in Backup Copy or Replica
Hi Franc,
You're absolutely right, I misclicked yesterday because was in a hurry. My sincere apologies about the misleading information, I updated my previous post. Anyway, the suggestion to use replication from backup is still valid, at least because it allows us to reduce load on the production environment.
Thanks!

No problem! Indeed, replicating from backup is the preferred way to go.

Re: Transaction Logs in Backup Copy or Replica
What is replication from backup? Instead of doing replication from VMs? By Veeam best practice the replication should be done on a Veeam server at the DR site. Not sure how that Veeam server at the DR location would be able to see the production Veeam server backups.

Re: Transaction Logs in Backup Copy or Replica
I'm not sure what you mean. We are replicating from our Veeam server at our main site to vCenter in the DR site. Our backup copies are also located at the DR site, so that's where Veeam is taking it's backups from (through the backup proxy at the DR site). In the replication job settings you are able to select a source for the replication. Choose the backup repository at the DR site there (if you have any). You can also choose a repository at the main site, but that would mean all data is being transferred over the WAN connection instead of being local at the DR site.

Re: Transaction Logs in Backup Copy or Replica
Hello,
In general, it is possible to deploy Veeam B&R on the DR site to orchestrate all tasks including the primary backups on the production site, backup copies, and replications from the production site to the DR one.
Thanks!
