Feature Request - Veeam FLR support for Storage Spaces volumes

Post by tednorcygate »

Hi,

this is an FR for both Veeam Backup and Replication and Veeam Backup for Azure.

When performing an FLR for a system running Storage Spaces with multiple disks the affected volume won't be available as Veeam does not currently support FLR for Storage Spaces volume ( had a case #04800299 ) and the volume does not show. This was referenced to Microsoft offically not supporting Storage Spaces in Veeam (veeam-backup-replication-f2/guest-vm-wi ... 6114b4ca21).

However, now with Azure being big and all they have this listed as a recommended action to improve IOPS on SQL servers running in Azure.
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/ ... -checklist
"Stripe multiple Azure data disks using Storage Spaces to increase I/O bandwidth up to the target virtual machine's IOPS and throughput limits."
With azure adoption rising and the great feature for SPs and MSPs to use their licenses in Azure when connected to a local Veeam B&R server this is going to be a growing problem not being able to properly restore individual files of SQL servers in Azure.

Best regards

Hi, Ted.

Thanks for sharing this valuable information.

The only question for me is how long will people run SQL Server in Azure IaaS before they switch to Azure SQL Server. And also what percent of people will choose to stick with IaaS. Because it is a complex feature to implement, so the number of customers requiring this has to be large (including in the long term) before we can prioritize it over other pending features.

Thanks!
Anton

Hello Anton,

all of our customers utilizing AZ are in somewhat of a hybrid with the majority of SQL-databases still on Servers, and a minority in Azure SQL Server.
The overall trend we can see is that people seem to stick with the IaaS for the existing/migrated workloads and only utilizing Azure IaaS when they develop new native azure apps and such. Depending on company size, these changes in thought from IaaS to PaaS take a looong time...
