Feature Requests - Custom pop-up message

Post by Jules POLI »

Hello,

Can you add a feature to generate a pop-up on remote Veeam consoles to warn the user of an upcoming action on the server (update, reboot...)?

Thanks in advance,

Hello, but how would Veeam know a server reboot is coming?

Hello Gostev, the purpose of the message is not to anticipate a reboot, but to warn console users that an administrator is about to reboot the server, for security updates for example.
In my case, I manage the Veeam server for my customer, but sometimes I have to perform certain actions on the server that require the Veeam server to be stopped, so I have to warn the users currently connected to stop the actions in progress and close their remote Veeam console.

My question was, how would Veeam know that "an administrator is about to reboot the server"?

Veeam doesn't need to know that, I'm just talking about an informal pop-up. There's no automatic action behind it. Once the pop-up has been transmitted to the active consoles, I know that the users have been informed that I'm carrying out (manual) maintenance on the server.

Sorry but is a bit strange for Veeam to build an alternative informal messaging app for backup admins to chat with other backup admins :) don't we all already have enough corporate messaging tools in place to receive notifications about planned downtimes? Like corp email, Teams etc.

Since maintenance is almost always scheduled in advance in mature IT environments, perhaps the person responsible for updating backup server should just send a regular email with the time of maintenance to everyone with rights to access backup server? This is how it's done at Veeam for all enterprise app updates. It is a much better approach b/c it will prevent people from starting long-running tasks (as some restores can take many hours). Obviously getting an informal message "Backup server reboot in 5 minutes!" will not help you much if you're already in the middle of restore.

Further, the approach with advance email detailing maintenance window should be used for updating any enterprise software (not just Veeam). The alternative you suggest basically requires you to ask every other software vendor to build some sort of "messaging to other users" into their app... which will be refused by most because this is just not how upcoming maintenance windows notifications are distributed in mature IT environments.

Hi guys,

and so what about a sort of "Welcome message"? It could be managed and distributed from the Veeam Enterprise Manager for eg.

To clarify:
it can be useful in case the corporate IT administrator, of a geo-distributed company, want to remind some rule to-be-follow to the local admins at the edge sites.

Have a nice day

vCenter has this. I agree that following ITIL and general best practice to create a change is the way to go. Sometime it would indeed be good to have an reminder popping up for people that filter out anything from service now in their emails to /dev/null

You can do a custom text banner via the registry : https://www.veeam.com/kb4458 Not sure if this is what you are looking for

Hi tdewin,

it's exactly what I was looking for.

But my suggestion is that it will be wonderful if there'll be a possibility to handled it from the Enterprise server selecting specific Backup Servers from the list. Or in another way, directly on the Backup server using the GUI of the Veeam Console (only accessing with Administrator rights, of course).

Best regards
