I have a regular problem where end users will remove all permissions to folders except for themselves. I am able to backup these files properly, but restores are always a problem. My process is to do an instant restore of the server, and mount the VMDK to another VM, take ownership of the folders and fix the permissions, then copy the files to the original location.
Is there anything in the works that would allow an operator to restore these files? As it is most restores get escalated to someone with with extensive experience in both VMware and Windows Server managment. I had hoped to offload daily backup and restore tasks to an operator level employee.

Re: File level restore to server without permissions
I will ask QC to test your scenario, and then discuss it with R&D.
