Filerestore to a running VM ? Appliance doesn't seem to work

Post by Titanmike »

I am currently evaluating the product to see how suitable it is for our environment.
So far I must say it is a good product for a good price.

There is one last thing which I can't seem to get working.

I have created a backup of a running virtual machine which shows up under 'Backups'. When I then try to run the File Level Restore Wizard (from the tools menu)
it starts the virtual appliance, updates the vmware tools for Linux but then sits there at the shell until I power it off again:

Any tips ?

Hello, please let me know what Veeam Backup version and VMware Player version are you using?

Please use VMware Player 2.5 instead, as 3.0 is not supported according to the System Requirements:

OK, thanks for checking - please contact our support for further troubleshooting then, as this is not a known issue, and so must be specific to your environment. You should be seeing Backup Browser window popping up at this moment, so if you do not see it - probably the readiness broadcast from virtual appliance gets blocked by some firewall application on your computer.

Also, please note that for Windows VMs you can use built-in file level restore (through Restore wizard), this one does not require running the virtual appliance.

But this would restore the file to the server running veeam doesn't it and not to the VM the file was originally on ?
Is this how the appliance would behave too ?

You can restore files to any network location using the built-in file level restore. We typically restore directly to the affected server via the administrative share.

When I try to restore a file I can only see the local filesystem to copy it to. When I use the UNC path it doesn't give me the option to actually enter the credentials as every server has different passwords ... I'll see if we can work around this somehow ...

You can use mapped network drive, or net use command.
But yes, both built-in file restore, and file level restore wizard are the same as it comes to destination selection.

Hello, as I've said earlier probably the readiness broadcast from virtual appliance gets blocked by some firewall application on this server. Please open a support case to let our devs investigate this closer. Thanks!

Our lab doesn't use any firewall, neither on the server side nor hardware.

We will be buying a 6 socket license soon so I will be opening a support ticket if we experience the same issue in out live environment.

i had the same issues with file-level restore appliance (using veeam backup 4.1.1, VMware Player 2.5.4) on a windows 2008 R2 host.

after adding a firewall rule for Veeam.Backup.FileRestore.exe everything works fine - the file-level restore browser popps up!

Well in our case the Windows Firewall was turned off and no hardware firewall was in place :)

Same issue solved by openning FW for Veeam.Backup.FileRestore.exe

When restoring a single small file, it took hours just to show a "cannot connect server" dialog !

Same solution : I just add an exception in th FW for C:\program files\veeam\backup and fastscp\veeamagent.exe to fix the issue

regards

PS : it is a good idea to check the "notify me when FW block a program" (translated from french UI ....) FW settings checkbox to grab these kinds of network issues
