FLR: Lack of support for GPT compressed files

Post by friadent »

As mentioned in the FAQ File Level Restore has GPT support. We have a lot of failures during the restore of GPT files from Windows 2008 R2. During a long support call [ID#5177460] we figured out, that it seems to be a problem to restore compressed NTFS files with more than one block. Your support said this is not solvable.

FLR is great and it is strictly necessary to replace other legacy backup software. GPT is a common file system and compressed files are usual to save file space.

Do you plan to support compressed files on GPT? If not you should clarify the FAQ.

I need to check with R&D on that, first time I hear.

OK, it looks like you are using Linux FLR to restore from Windows VM. You should use native Windows FLR instead, because Linux NTFS driver does not behave well with large NTFS volumes. That fact is indeed unresolvable from our side. Thanks.

@Gostev - What do you mean by "The fact is indeed unresolvable from our side"? Are you saying in a test lab you have been able to re-create friadent's issue, or that Veeam cannot use FLR ever for GPT?

He's saying that the user was attempting to use the Linux FLR appliance rather than the Window FLR. This is a limitation of the Linux NTFS driver which Veeam does not develop. If the user performs the restore using the Windows FLR procedure it should be supported.
